All foals start as a dream. And mine came to life after a year out of the saddle battling neurological health issues (which turned out to be from mold). Down in the dumps, wanting my healthy life back and longing for days in the arena, I decided to jump into something I could do from the ground. Breed my own perfect riding horse. We’ve remarked often how many horses we come across are missing steps in their training. Either they are anxious, can’t hold the canter one way, get tight in the poll, can’t trail ride… I thought wouldn’t it be a joy to raise a foal from day one and *know* you’re covering everything. Know that you introduced them to all that life has to offer, with compassion and patience in a way they can understand. With the goal being mentally and physically balanced happy horses who will suit the average amateur rider. This first season of warmblood breeding at Copper Light already had some swirls in the road, but we’re so so looking forward to hopefully welcoming two dressage bred foals in April, with big plans already underway for 2027.
I’ve been sharing a bit of the behind the scenes on our instagram Breeding Highlight, but as we get closer to foaling dates I thought it would be even more helpful to share some of the educational articles I’ve found most useful. I like to research my pursuits and believe education should be constant, so I’m excited to share some of the principles our program focuses on.
I’d also like to say that we have just the best Repro team I could hope for, and I wouldn’t have started this journey without them. Having talented specially trained reproductive vets are just so critical both to mare and foal health but also making sure precious breedings go well! We’re ever so grateful to Dr Fullana and Dr Rogers at Harbour Ridge Equine as well as the recipient herd team at Peterson and Smith.
